Armed with very little stone setting knowledge and gung-ho spirit, I went ahead and set the bloody ring! Erin and one of the apprentices in the class gave us a demo at the start of the day and off we went.
Steps include: put the stone in to test height; use dividers to mark where the girdle sits; use hart bur to take away 30-40% of the prongs (hart bur can be same size as stone or smaller); use chain nose pliers to gently fold down prongs; cut prongs where snips meet the table of the stone; use cup bur to clean up so that the height of the prong sits flush or just under the table.
This week’s wrap up:
• Used GRS ball vise
• Used hart bur, cup bur
• Used 6mm black spinel
